What is the difference between silicone extrusion and molding processes?

Hits: 188 img

Silicone extrusion and molding are two common silicone processing processes, which differ in operating methods and application fields.

Silicone Extrusion: Silicone extrusion is a process of heating the silicone material and pushing it into an extruder, and then extruding the silicone into a specific shape through an extrusion machine. This process is similar to plastic extrusion molding, but uses silicone material. Silicone extrusion can produce continuous length silicone products, such as pipelines, sealing strips, etc. The silicone during the extrusion process can have different hardness, color, and shape.

Moulding: Moulding is the process of placing pre prepared silicone material into a mold and applying pressure to fill the entire mold. The mold can have the desired shape and size of the product. After the silicone material is cured and hardened in the mold, the product can be removed from the mold. The molding process is commonly used to produce various silicone products, such as seals, keyboards, buttons, etc. Moulding can be used to produce small or large quantities of silicone products.

The main difference between these two processes lies in the processing method and application scope. Silicone extrusion is suitable for producing continuous length silicone products, while molding is suitable for producing silicone products with specific shapes and sizes. The choice of process depends on factors such as the design requirements, batch requirements, and production costs of the required products.
