Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is commonly used and has applications in various industries. It is mainly used in rubber to neutralize the acidity of fillers, accelerate vulcanization speed and cross-linking density, and has good water solubility. It also has good compatibility with many organic components, excellent lubricity, moisturizing, dispersibility, and can be used as an anti-static agent and softener.
Generally, PEG-4000 is used in rubber. If the molecular weight is too low, the compatibility is poor, it is easy to precipitate, and it is a liquid that is difficult to add. If the molecular weight is too high, there are few alcohol groups per unit mass (low hydroxyl value), and the neutralization effect is poor. Because the molecular weight of 4000 is a solid sheet, easy to process, easy to add, and not easy to precipitate, medium molecular weight polymers have better compatibility with rubber, so PEG-4000 is generally chosen.
The role of PEG can be summarized as follows:
1. Processing aids can increase the extrusion speed of rubber materials, improve demolding properties, and make the surface of products shiny. They also help to remove moisture during vulcanization. When applied to tires and rubber molded products, PEG-4000 has a good lubricating effect, making the surface of the product smoother. In the production process of natural rubber and synthetic rubber, it can also be used as an internal release agent. The advantage is that it does not evaporate, does not produce ash, and the mold remains clean after demolding. Moreover, the surface of molded products is smoother and cleaner due to its addition.
2. Vulcanizing agents play a role in regulating the bonding properties between raw rubber and fillers (especially white), as well as reducing the Mooney and increasing the vulcanization rate. They have a good activating effect on thiazole accelerators, which can improve the vulcanization rate and crosslinking degree. Especially in the formula of extrusion microwave continuous vulcanization reinforced with EPDM white CB. It is best not to use PEG for products bonded to metal.
3. Active agents for acidic fillers, especially white carbon black, can be used as treatment agents for white carbon black to activate sulfurization systems. Wet the surface of acidic fillers such as white carbon black. One reaction is neutralization, and the other is similar to coverage. Because acidic fillers can adsorb, please note that they are adsorption promoters. The usage amount is directly proportional to the amount of acidic surface area of the acidic filler, etc. We can basically understand it as the acidic surface has been neutralized. Of course, other sulfurization reactions may also result in acidity, such as HS. Leave those to zinc oxide to handle.
4. Activated dispersant, when used as an activated dispersant in rubber compounds with various fillers and pigments, can reduce or eliminate the influence of fillers on vulcanization, make various additives evenly dispersed and prolong the burning time, and improve the physical and mechanical properties of rubber products. Among various colored rubber products, it can make the products have bright colors. Due to its polarity characteristics, it can also enhance the microwave absorption of non-polar rubber (such as EPDM).
