Disadvantages of water-based coatings

Hits: 535 img

1. Water based coatings require high cleanliness during the construction process and on the surface of the material. Due to the high surface tension of water, dirt can easily cause shrinkage in the coating film.

2. Water based coatings have poor stability against strong mechanical shear forces. When the flow rate in the conveying pipeline changes rapidly, dispersed particles are compressed into solid particles, causing the coating to produce pitting. Require the conveying pipeline to have a good shape and no defects on the pipe wall.

3. Water based coatings are highly corrosive to painting equipment and require the use of corrosion-resistant liners or stainless steel materials, resulting in high equipment costs. The corrosion of water-based coatings on transport pipelines, metal dissolution, and the precipitation of dispersed particles, resulting in the formation of pitting on the coating, also require the use of stainless steel pipes.

4. Baking water-based coatings have strict requirements for construction environmental conditions (temperature, humidity), which increases the investment in temperature and humidity control equipment and also increases energy consumption.

5. The latent heat of evaporation of water-based coatings is high, and the baking energy consumption is high. Cathodic electrophoretic coatings need to be baked at 180 ℃; However, latex paint takes a long time to completely dry.

6. Organic solvents with high boiling points in water-based coatings produce a lot of oil fumes during baking, which condense and drip onto the surface of the coating, affecting its appearance.

7. Water based coatings suffer from poor water resistance. The medium of water-based coatings is generally slightly alkaline (pH 7.5-8.5), and the ester bonds in the resin are easily hydrolyzed, causing molecular chain degradation and affecting the stability of the coating and the water resistance of the coating film.

8. Water based coatings have a short shelf life. At present, the shelf life of imported raw materials is six months, while domestic ones are even lower. Storage must be within 5-30 ℃, as low temperatures can freeze and damage, while high temperatures can thicken. It should also be noted that diluted water-based coatings can greatly reduce their shelf life.

Although water-based coatings have many problems, some of them can still be prevented and solved through the continuous improvement of formulation, coating technology, and equipment.
