Why do silicone products smell

Silica gel is a widely used material in modern times. Silicone Pacifiers for babies, silicone mobile phone cases we hold in our hands, prostheses for professional and medical use, and separation columns for separating various organic substances in the laboratory all play a very important role in our production and life.

However, many careful friends will find that the newly purchased silica gel appliances can smell a peculiar smell. What is the peculiar smell?

Before curing, liquid silica gel is environmentally friendly, non-toxic and has no smell. But when making silicone utensils, it is time to add masterbatch ingredients and vulcanizing agent, and then high-temperature molding through oil press or injection machine. During this process, a little smell will be generated, which is normal. After being placed under natural ventilation for twoorthree days, the smell will disappear naturally, without affecting the quality of silica gel products.

However, if the smell of silica gel products is extremely pungent, it needs to be noted that the manufacturer of silica gel products may have used unqualified silica gel raw materials or vulcanizing agents.

Silica gel itself is actually a relatively safe material, so we try to choose large-scale products when purchasing, so that the safety is also guaranteed.

If the purchased silica gel products have a heavy odor, we can try the following methods to eliminate the odor:

1. Boiling method

Boil in boiling water for 10~30 minutes, take it out and dry it. It is mostly used in silicone products that are water-resistant but not high-temperature resistant;

2. Baking method

That is, directly bake at 200 ℃ for 10~30 minutes, and finally clean and wipe with a clean wet cloth, and then dry;

For the silica gel without peculiar smell, we still suggest to use the above method once before use, which is safer. In addition, some silica gel materials are thin and soft. The manufacturer may only recommend scalding with hot water, so scald as many times as possible to promote the volatilization of residues. If you have a high-temperature steam sterilizer at home, you can also try to use it.
