What is the difference between rubber products, extrusion process and molding process?

Hits: 59 img

Generally speaking, there are two common forming methods for rubber products: molding and extrusion, which can be used to make sealing rings, rubber strips, rubber pipes, rubber sleeves, gaskets, and so on. The different functions and sizes of products result in different process choices.
The molding process, as the name suggests, is a processing method of pressing and forming. The refined sheet shaped rubber preform is placed in the mold cavity, placed in the mold cavity, and then the mold is closed and pressurized to form, cure or vulcanize, and then demolded.

The molding process is suitable for the molding and processing of thermosetting and thermoplastic products. The rubber products made using the molding process mainly include structural connectors, protective seals, and electrical insulation components, such as sealing rings, washers, protective sleeves, sealing plugs, edge sleeves, gaskets, oil seals, miscellaneous parts, and other products. Widely used in materials fields such as industry and agriculture, transportation, electrification, construction machinery, and daily necessities.

Extrusion, also known as extrusion molding, generally selects an extruder, head, and die based on the type and shape of the processed material. The rubber material is then processed through the extruder barrel and screw, while being thermally plasticized and pushed forward to produce various cross-sectional shapes of rubber products.

In the extrusion process, the rubber material generally needs to be refined, and also undergoes shaping methods such as cooling, solidification, or vulcanization. The process conditions used are also relatively complex, such as screw speed, machine head pressure, material temperature and molding temperature, traction speed, etc.

The extrusion process is suitable for the processing of thermoplastic rubber. It can be used to produce sealing strips, pipes, plates, sheets, films, various complex cross-sectional shapes of rubber products, as well as hollow, solid, foam and other finished rubber products. Widely used in the construction industry, petrochemical industry, mechanical manufacturing, electronic equipment, automotive aviation and other fields.
