Dimethicone Fluid vs. Dimethicone Emulsion: Same PDMS, Two Completely Different Delivery Systems

Hits: 2187 img

Question 1: It's the same polydimethylsiloxane — why buy the oil instead of the emulsion, or vice versa?

Answer: One sentence: the fluid is 100% anhydrous PDMS you disperse yourself; the emulsion is that PDMS pre-shattered into 100–600 nm water-dispersible droplets, ready to dilute and dose.

MY 201 / DM50–DM1000 fluids run 5 cps to 2 million cps, surface tension 20.7–21.1 mN/m, flash point up to ≥300 °C, and are insoluble in water. MY 95066/9504 emulsions are milky nonionic O/W systems (solids 57–70%, pH 5–7.5) that mix into aqueous formulations instantly. Selection rule: oil-phase work, lubrication, dielectric duty → fluid; aqueous formulations (shampoo, textile finish, release coatings) → emulsion.

Question 2: Where do they diverge in handling, formulation, and cost? Can one replace the other?

Answer: Let's look scenario by scenario (based on measured parameters of commercially available grades):

Conclusion: They are delivery formats, not substitutes. You cannot pour a 100% fluid into a shampoo bottle — it won't disperse and will separate on shelf; equally, you cannot run a 65%-solids emulsion (35% water) inside a transformer or a hot-mold release cycle where water flashes off. Practical guidance: ① if your line is water-based and you currently struggle to disperse raw silicone oil, the pre-emulsified grade eliminates your high-shear step entirely — but check centrifugal stability (≤0.5 mL separation at 2500 rpm × 15 min) on incoming batches, because emulsifier balance is the whole product; ② if you need exact actives content or anhydrous conditions, buy the fluid and control viscosity by blending near-viscosity grades; ③ remember the paradox: silicone oil is itself an excellent defoamer, so any emulsion you build around it fights its own chemistry — expect tight process control (emulsifier HLB blend, ~12% loading, ~2000 r/min shear) if you ever decide to in-house the emulsification instead of buying MY 95066. Validate final dosages with stability-chamber and field trials before switching formats.
